I think it is foolish to only have this delightful breakfast once a year. As a matter of fact, there is no reason this should only be eaten for breakfast. It is a complete meal, takes very little time to make and is filled with all things the family loves.
Besides, what is seriously wrong about enjoying Breakfast for dinner? I think it is a great idea to mix things up that way once in a while. This has all the good things in it that are part of a great meal.
Christmas Breakfast Casserole is filling, hearty and even comforting. With a touch of Mustard Powder, the dish is filled with complimentary flavors.
Can this Casserole be made in advance?
It is a wonderful idea to make this in advance. You can prepare the entire casserole, cover it and place it in the refrigerator before baking it. Then when you are waiting for your coffee in the morning, place the casserole into a preheated oven.
If I do not have ground breakfast sausage, what can I use?
Bacon is always the perfect substitute as a breakfast meat. You could also use ground beef in this casserole. Ground beef will put a whole new spin on the meal and make it feel more like a dinner, when served for the evening meal.
Can I freeze the casserole after baking it?
The casserole can be covered tightly or placed in a freezer safe container and then placed into the freezer for up to 2 months.
What is the best type of Cheese to use?
The recipe does call for shredded Cheddar Cheese, however, you could use any one of a different flavors. There are some great blended varieties that would also add another layer of flavor to this yummy Breakfast Casserole. Blends such as 3 cheese, Mexican Blend, Pepperjack, or even Colby Jack cheese are great substitutions that add flavor.
Ingredients:
6 slices of bread, you can use white, wheat or a combination of both.
1 pound ground Breakfast Sausage
½ tsp Salt
1 tsp Mustard Powder
2 cups Milk, whole
4 eggs, beaten
1 cup Mild Cheddar Cheese, shredded
HOW TO MAKE Christmas Breakfast Casserole:
Step 1. In a skillet over medium high heat, crumble the ground breakfast sausage
Step 2. Cook the sausage thoroughly and drain the grease from the skillet
Step 3. In a medium bowl combine the milk, eggs, salt and mustard powder using a whisk to blend it all
Step 4. Stir in the bread crumbs, breakfast sausage, and the shredded cheese
Step 5. Be sure to coat all the ingredients evenly
Step 6. Pour into the greased baking dish
Step 7. Cover the dish tightly and chill in the refrigerator overnight or 8 hours
Step 8. Preheat the oven to 350*
Step 9. Cover the baking dish with a cover or Aluminum foil and bake for 45 to 60 minutes
Step 10. Reduce the heat to 325* and uncover the baking dish
Step 11. Bake for another 30 minutes or until set completely
Step 12. Cut and serve
