Can I use fresh Salmon Filets?
You certainly can. The filets will give a fresher flavor to the dish. This recipe does call for canned, however, nothing will need to be adjusted if you opt for fresh salmon over canned.
What dipping sauce do you recommend?
Personally, I do not use a dipping sauce, I prefer the taste of the savory Salmon pattie untouched by dipping sauces. I do, however, provide sauce for my crew at home. I put out Tartar Sauce, Cocktail Sauce and Ranch.
Are Salmon Patties healthy?
Salmon is an extremely healthy seafood. As for Salmon Patties, this would depend on which ingredients you use in making your patties. This recipe could be adjusted to use Greek yogurt, in place of the mayo; and also whole wheat flour rather than white all purpose flour.
Ingredients:
1 can Salmon, drained
3 tbsp Mayonnaise
1 Egg, large
¼ cup cornmeal
¼ cup flour
¼ cup Yellow Onion, finely chopped
Oil for frying
How to make Southern Fried Salmon Patties:
Step 1. Empty the Salmon into the bowl after draining
Step 2. Using a fork, flake the meat apart
Step 3. Add the onion, cornmeal, flour, egg, mayonnaise to the bowl with the Salmon
Step 4. Mix the ingredients really well to combine.
Step 5. Form the mixture into patties, about the size of a ground beef patty
Step 6. In a skillet, heat about an inch of oil over medium high heat
Step 7. Carefully lower the patties into the heated oil and brown for about 3 to 4 minutes
Step 8. Flip the Salmon patty over and cook the other side for about 3 minutes.
Step 9. The patties should be Golden brown in color.
Step 10. Sprinkle with chopped parsley as a garnish.
