Even though it is a perfect warm and comforting meal for the chillier weather, this casserole is perfect at any time of the year. It is perfect for busy weeknights, lazy weekends and parties or celebrations.
What is it that is so special about a casserole? For one, there are so many ways that you can make a casserole.
So many different ingredients that would make it the best. Plus, casseroles are so easy to throw together. Most often they can be made all in one dish.
This casserole has so many layers of flavors that are sure to tickle your tongue it is truly delightful. From the Sauer Kraut tucked inside, the kielbasa, the pasta and the nutty taste of Swiss cheese.
Can I use another type of sausage?
You could certainly use smoked sausage, beef sausage, ring bologna or stick with the Polish Sausage or kielbasa. They are all great choices
Can this casserole be frozen?
Once the dish has cooled completely, simply place it in an airtight container and place it into the freezer. It will last for up to 4 months.
What type of pasta should I use?
There are many varieties of pasta that could be used, I prefer one that has the ability to hold some of the sauce in it. I like to use Penne pasta as it holds a good amount of the sauce and the cheese.
What type of side dish should I serve with this casserole?
This casserole is actually a complete meal, meaning it has all that is needed for a meal. However, I understand wanting to add a side dish, may I suggest some roasted Brussel Sprouts or Asparagus.
Ingredients:
4 cups Penne pasta, cooked according to package
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp flour
2 ½ cups milk
1 cup Sour Cream
1 tsp garlic powder
2 to 3 tbsp Dijon mustard
16 ounces Sauerkraut, drained
4 green onions, chopped
1 ½ pounds Polska Kielbasa or Polish Sausage
3 cups Swiss Cheese, divided
Salt and pepper to taste, if desired
HOW TO MAKE POLISH PASTA CASSEROLE:
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 350*
Step 2. Grease a 9×13 casserole dish
Step 3. Cook the pasta according to the package directions, rinse and drain well
Step 4. In a saucepan melt the butter and whisk in the flour, let cook for one minute while continuing to whisk
Step 5. While whisking the flour, add in the milk, whisking continuously
Step 6. Cook until thickened
Step 7. Remove from the heat and stir in garlic powder, Sour Cream, dijon mustard and salt and pepper if desired
Step 8. Pour the sauce over the pasta in the prepared baking dish
Step 9. Add in the sauerkraut, green onions, kielbasa and 2 cups of the shredded Swiss Cheese
Step 10. Stir to combine all
Step 11. Top with the remaining Shredded Swiss Cheese
Step 12.Place in the oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes. The cheese should be browned and bubbly
Step 13.Let rest for 5 minutes, then serve and enjoy!
