Turtle candy has been a traditional candy Made around the Holidays for many generations. I used to love being asked to help when I was young. Now I am lucky enough to be able to make these myself. Today, you can easily purchase a package of Turtle candy in many local stores.
However, they have gotten so commercialized that they no longer resemble turtles, they are just a glob of nuts, caramel and chocolate.
The best turtle candy is the one that comes out looking like a turtle and tasting fresh. The Turtle would have a smooth center, crunchy legs, and the chocolate shell on top. This recipe is so easy to follow, actually really easy to make, just takes a little effort to get the Turtles to look like turtles.
The effort is so worth it, if you can get the younger ones to help you. They can set the pecans up the way they should be so you just have to add the caramel and chocolate.
What is Turtle Candy?
It is a seriously rich treat with gooey caramel, chocolate and nuts or pretzels. They are generally made in a way that they resemble the shape of a turtle.
Can I use other nuts?
If you do not have pecans handy, you could definitely use almonds or even macadamia nuts. Cashews could be used, however, cashews have a slightly bitter taste to them, which would ultimately be evened out with the sweetness of the caramel and the chocolate.
How do I store these candies?
The candy can be kept in an airtight container and left on the counter. They can also be kept in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Just know that if kept in the refrigerator, they will not have ooey gooey caramel. The caramel will stiffen up with the cold refrigerated temperatures.
