The most common name for this is Garbage Bread, but it is far from garbage! So, I simply do not use that title, and it has a few small changes from many other versions.
That is the fun of recipes! You can play around and make them exactly what your family likes and then share it with the world!
When I say Everything Included, basically this means that you can add anything and everything you would like to add. The recipe that I want to share with you today is one that my family fell in love with, and literally beg for it consistently.
The ingredients basically equal that of a plain Bacon Cheeseburger. So you could call it that. This recipe could be used to make a meal, which would basically be a complete meal, or you could add a side. You could serve this as an appetizer, or a snack in the evening.
What type of dough do you recommend?
I have used both French Bread dough and Pizza Dough. Both out of the can from the refrigerated section of my local store. I believe that I like French bread best.
Can I add ingredients to this recipe?
Certainly! If there is an additional ingredient that is not here, but your family loves, feel free to use it. For instance, with this recipe, I will generally add in some chopped pickles, or sweet relish.
How do I keep this fresh after dinner?
IF you have any left after dinner, place it in a ziploc bag and push the air out as much as possible. You could also wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and then stick in the refrigerator. It will last in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Can I use a different type of meat?
You could use Chicken, Sausage, Pork or any other type of meat you like. Again, this recipe is more closely related to cheeseburger bread.
What type of cheese should we use?
I do suggest a Cheddar Cheese that has been shredded. However, a blend of cheese such as Monterey Jack or Colby Jack works really well in this recipe.
Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef
½ pound bacon, cooked and crumbled
½ yellow Onion, diced
1 tbsp Steak Seasoning or a Seasoned Salt
½ cup Green onions, chopped
Salt and pepper to taste
2 cups Cheddar Cheese, shredded
1 tube, refrigerated French Loaf Dough, or pizza dough
2 tbsp butter, melted
HOW TO MAKE GARBAGE BREAD:
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 375*
Step 2. In a skillet on the stove over medium heat, fry the bacon until browned and crispy, remove and place on a paper towel to drain excess fat
Step 3. In the same skillet, crumble and brown the ground beef and the onion. Season with the Steak Seasoning
Step 4. Season with salt and pepper if desired
Step 5. Stir in the green onions and the crumbled bacon and stir to blend
Step 6. Open the tube of bread dough and roll the dough out to a rectangular shape
Step 7. Spread the beef mixture over the entire bread, leave a one inch border around the edges
Step 8. Top the beef mixture with the shredded cheese
Step 9. Starting at the long edges, roll the loaf of bread up into a roll or log shape, as tightly as you can
Step 10. Fold the edges of the roll under the loaf about ½ inch on both ends
Step 11. Place the roll on a baking sheet and brush the entire roll with melted butter
Step 12. Bake until golden brown, about 20 to 25 minutes
