Fried cabbage does not get enough attention in my opinion. Although I remember as a kid the smell was the one thing that kept my siblings and I not really liking it. However, as I grew older, I learned to enjoy the smell because I absolutely fell in love with Southern Fried Cabbage. Especially when it includes bacon and onions.
This is one recipe from my youth that I felt no need to change at all. I am much luckier than my Mom was, my kids do not argue when I serve this dish. The flavor makes them happy, which makes me happy.
The cabbage is sauteed in bacon grease along with the onions. This gives an extended bacon flavor that coats everything, and who does not like bacon? This is a savory side dish, but you could also serve it as the main dish if you wanted.
You could also consider this a versatile recipe, however, it really should not be changed, it is perfect as is.
Can I leave the bacon out?
Well, leaving the bacon out would mean that you would have to use another type of fat to saute the vegetables in. It would also eliminate the savory aspect of the bacon. If you wanted, you could try a switch with Turkey bacon. I have never tried that myself, so I cannot say how well it works.
Can I keep the leftovers?
The leftover fried cabbage can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 4 days. You could also freeze this dish for up to 3 months.
What makes this such a special recipe?
It is super easy to make, it is a comforting food, and it has bacon in it! Bacon makes this such a great flavored dish.
