Method
- 1. Put the butter, water, sugar, and vanilla in a pan and bring the mixture to a boil.
- 2. Stir in the flour until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the pan sides.
- 3. Take it off the heat and let it cool.
- 4. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- 5. Beat in one egg at a time, mixing until smooth.
- 6. Drop tablespoons of this batter on to baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
- 7. Bake for 15 minutes.
- 8. Turn the oven down to 350°F and cook for another 15 minutes.
- 9. Take the shells out of the oven and cut a little slit into the side of each one using a sharp knife.
10. Stand back because steam will escape. - 11. Let the shells cool completely.
- 12. Beat the filling ingredients until the filling is thick.
- 13. Cut each shell in half across the middle and add the vanilla filling mixture using a piping bag or a spoon.
- 14. Dust with powdered sugar and serve.
Notes
Variations and Substitutions:
There are plenty of cream puff variations, such as caramel, chocolate or even fresh berries. You can play with the flavors, using a different flavor of instant pudding or adding fruit, chocolate chips, nuts, or anything else you wish to the cream filling.
