Amish Onion Fritters

Amish Onion Fritters are a delicious, old-fashioned comfort food made with thinly sliced yellow onions and a simple, seasoned batter.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt, adjusted to taste
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, for slight sweetness)
  • ¾ cup water or buttermilk, for extra flavor
  • 1 large eggOil for frying (vegetable or canola oil, about 2–3 cups depending on the pan)

Method
 

  1. Peel the yellow onions and slice them thinly. Place them in a large mixing bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and optional sugar.
  3. Add the egg and water or buttermilk to the dry ingredients. Mix until a thick, scoopable batter forms.
  4. Stir the sliced onions into the batter until they are evenly coated.
  5. Pour the oil into a deep skillet or frying pan to a depth of approximately 1–2 inches. Heat over medium heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C).
  6. Drop spoonfuls of the onion mixture into the hot oil. Flatten each portion slightly with the back of a spoon.
  7. Fry for approximately 2–3 minutes per side, or until the fritters are golden brown and crispy.
  8. Transfer the cooked fritters to a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil. Serve warm.
