When you’re headed to Kinnick Stadium by 6AM, you can’t miss the gorgeous Iowa Sunrise to the East every Saturday. Once you’re in the parking lot, mix yourself up this delicious Iowa Sunrise Cocktail to kick start the tailgate party and enjoy the view!
Welcome to #10DaysofTailgate! We have nearly two dozen bloggers with over one hundred recipes scheduled to inspire you through an entire tailgating season. Think chicken wings, skewers, sweet nibbles, and cocktails. The event runs September 20th through September 30th. Just remember: your fork does not go into your monitor…no matter how much you might want to taste some of these dishes. Okay? Get ready…get set… BREAK!
Football season is finally here and it’s one of my favorite seasons. I kind of classify football as a season of it’s own to tell you the truth! I look forward to Fall for many reasons and football ranks high on the list. There’s just something about hearing pads and helmets crashing together, the sound of the whistles blowing, that intense 90 yard punt return or the opposing team’s Quarterback getting sacked. My adrenaline sores during every football game whether we’re talking high school, college or NFL! I love it all… and I particularly love a great tailgate party before the game starts too! My bestie, S and I always kinda get a little carried away when we’re making dishes for our Chiefs tailgate parties, but hey you can never have too much food or beverages is how we like to think of it!
Growing up I have always been a die-hard Iowa Hawkeyes fan. Go Hawks!! There’s no better colors than Black and Gold, seriously! I mean my #2 team is even Black and Gold.. I’m talking the great M-I-Z… Z-O-U!
I swear there’s nothing like being in Iowa City on game day. I really don’t even know how to describe it to you other than… it’s something everyone should experience! Streets are packed, college houses are open, parties everywhere… they’re tailgating for blocks and blocks. Granted I’ve never been to another campus to tailgate before… other than my D2 school; which by the way was one of the biggest powerhouses in the Nation!! Go Bearcats!!
I went to the Egg Bowl one year at Ole Miss, but never tailgated. Boy… now football in the South is on a whole different level. Up here in the North we support our team by repping the jersey’s and t-shirts that read something like BEAT STATE–because we hate those Cyclones! But when you go down South.. you best go out and buy yourself an outfit that matches school colors and throw on a pair of heels because honey… you better become a Southern Belle when you attend a football game and I’m not joking!!
Anyways… back to my Hawks!
There’s just something about heading to Kinnick Stadium before 6am and having that gorgeous orange ball of flame coming up in the East that makes you stop and just think… “Damn that’s beautiful”. Seriously though. Sure, sure you can say you have gorgeous sunrises where you live too, but the sunrises here in Iowa… It’s God’s Country so they’re the most gorgeous you’re gonna find 🙂
Now after you get done admiring the real sunrise, walk on over to your tailgate, open the cooler and bust open the bottles to pour yourself a nice refreshing Iowa Sunrise Cocktail to start your morning off right! Ohh, and then you can go back to that flame ball that’s popping up over the horizon!
- 1 ounce vodka
- 1 ounce white rum (Bacardi)
- 1 ounce lemonade
- 2 ounces Sprite
- 4 ounces orange juice
- splash grenadine syrup
- Using an 8-10 ounce glass, first pour in the vodka followed by the Bacardi.
- Next, add the lemonade followed by the sprint and orange juice.
- Top the drink off with a splash of grenadine syrup and let it slowly settle to the bottom (resembling an Iowa Sunrise)
- You may now stir.
